Water Tanks – West Wyalong
West Wyalong is a town in New South Wales, Australia, which is the main town of the Bland Shire, located in the Central West region of New South Wales. It is located 467 kilometres west of Sydney. It’s located on the crossroads of the Newell Highway between Melbourne and Brisbane, and the Mid-Western Highway between Sydney and Adelaide.
The West Wyalong district is the largest cereal-growing centre in NSW. Eucalyptus oil production started in 1907 and the West Wyalong area became one of the major world exporters of the product. The town has its origins in the discovery of gold in 1893 and the availability of a good water supply at the White Tank. By 1895 West Wyalong’s streets were officialy laid out, but not on the usual grid, gold diggings, tents and tracks were already well established – hence the well loved twists and turns of the crooked Main Street. By the turn of the century the West Wyalong goldfield was one of the most productive in Australia
As water resources are finite, a major focus for the region going forward will be placed on water storage and conservation. Water is no longer the freely available commodity that has been in the past and the community will need to have a stronger focus on water harvesting and storage in order to meet demand expectations.
