Water Tanks – Maitland

Maitland is a city in the Lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia and the seat of Maitland City Council, situated on the Hunter River approximately 166 kilometres (103 mi) by road north of Sydney and 35 km north-west of Newcastle. It is on the New England Highway about 17 km from its start at Hexham.

At the 2011 census it had approximately 67,478 inhabitants, spread over an area of 390.2 square kilometres, with most of the population located in a strip along the New England Highway between the suburbs of Rutherford and Metford respectively. The city centre is located on the right bank of the Hunter River, protected from potential flooding by a levee. Surrounding areas include the cities of Cessnock and Singleton local government areas.

West Maitland was founded in 1820 close to the tidal reach of the Hunter River where vessels with a shallow draft could navigate. Nearby Morpeth served as the head of navigation for larger ships (later, steamships), and goods would be transhipped upriver to West Maitland on barges and smaller vessels. Originally the route river route between Morpeth and West Maitland was 26 kilometres, today after various floods and river course changes this has reduced to just 9 kilometres.

Maitland was, therefore, the point at which goods were unloaded for, and distributed to, the prosperous riverland of the Hunter Valley. Accordingly, there were large warehouses (some of which still exist) built, which faced onto the main High Street and backed onto the Hunter River. For almost 20 years until the Victorian gold rush, Maitland was the second largest town in Australia. The arrival of the railway from Newcastle in the 1850s, coupled with the increasing silting of the river and larger ships spelt the end of the traditional river traffic.

In more recent years, Maitland has become a fast growing area, particularly in the western part of Maitland, Aberglasslyn, Lochinvar, Greta. To match that growth the New South Wales Government recently invested in a 10 million litre reservoir to upgrade water supply.

Why are our tanks suited to New South Wales conditions?

#1 - Heritage Water Tanks catch more rain

It is predicted that New South Wales will experience the effects of climate change through more variable seasons and reduced rainfall in years to come. With this in mind, people living in the regions will need to be more mindful about water security and water storage solutions. This is why Heritage Water Tank's unique gutter system is more important than ever. With our rainwater collection system, which collects water from the roof of your tank, you can save up to 22% of your tank's volume in additional water each year. Our unique gutter system also prevents scouring around the base of your tank in high rainfall areas, as almost all of the runoff from the roof of your tank is collected back inside the tank.

#2 - Heritage Water Tanks are Built TUFF

The steel used in the production of our water tanks is a minimum of 1mm thick. This is thicker than the material used by most of our competitors and to a profile designed in consultation with Engineers to provide superior strength and exceptional durability.

With increasingly frequent extreme weather events predicted in the future, the need for a tank that can withstand the elements is vital. Our water tank walls are made from the proven, highly corrosion resistant ZINCALUME® G300, alloy coated, structural steel.

#3 - Heritage Water Tanks Arma Liner

Heritage Water Tanks Arma Liner is manufactured to the highest standards. We won't compromise on quality, which is why we provide high-quality industrial-grade liners for our tanks. Under independent testing conditions, our liners were rated on lineal weight or weight per square meter and were found to weigh 700g/m2. This was of particular interest because our closest competitor's liner weighed under 500g/m2.

The high density of our liner makes it one of the heaviest liners in the Australian Domestic Water Tank Industry. Extra weight means extra density. This testing also identified our ARMA Liner as the best in relation to Shear Strength, Tear Strength and Puncture Resistance, compared to the Aqualiner and Infinity liners of our competitors at the time of testing.

Water Tank Sizes & Capacities

Choosing the right tank for your needs should not be a difficult task. Use our RAINWATER HARVEST CALCULATOR to see how much water you can collect from the surface of your house and any sheds you plan to collect water from. Most households with 4 people use around 240,000kL per year for general household use. If you have more people in your household or if you have a large garden, you may need more storage.
