The region is also known for its coal production and began mining in Stratford a small village 12 kilometres south of Gloucester, and has since spread throughout the region.
Gloucester, known as the gateway to the Barrington Tops and is a charming country town nestled in a valley under a range of impressive monolith hills called The Bucketts. In February of 2016, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Water gazetted an Order under section 113A of the Water Act 1912 declaring an embargo (with exceptions) on further applications for commercial water licences for groundwater within the Gloucester Basin Water Shortage Zone. This will have ongoing consequences for the community in relation to access to groundwater for commercial purposes in the Water Shortage Zone.
