Emerald is a town in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. At June 2015 Emerald had an estimated urban population of 15,225. The town is the business centre for the Central Highlands Regional Council. Emerald lies on the Nogoa River, a tributary of the Fitzroy River. The town lies almost 300 kilometres from the coast and approximately 270 kilometres west of the city of Rockhampton on the junction of the Capricorn and Gregory highways.
Emerald is a service town for a large number of industries in the area. Extensive coal mining operations are carried out in the district. Agricultural activities in the region include growing cotton, grape, citrus and grain growing.citrus and grapes, wheat, pulse crops, sorghum, maize, lucerne, oats, barley and sunflowers. Water is supplied to 147 commercial customers within the Emerald Distribution System, which draws its supply from Nogoa-Mackenzie Dam Catchment. As there is increasing competition and demand for this valuable water supply, prices are always being reviewed by Sun Water and increased accordingly over time.
