Water Tanks – Cairns
Cairns is a city in the Tropical Far North Queensland Region. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland and ranks 14th overall in Australia. Cairns was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield. Cairns later developed into a railhead and major port for exporting sugar cane, gold and other metals, minerals and agricultural products from surrounding coastal areas and the Atherton Tableland region. Cairns is now an internationally recognised tourist destination and attracts tourists from all over the world, who are attracted to the area because of the natural beauty of the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
Cairns has a humid tropical climate and boasts some of the highest rainfall in Australia. Despite this, the region experiences variable rainfall in some years and farmers reliant on catchments such as Tinaroo Falls Dam in the Mareeba-Dimbulah catchment face reductions to their irrigation water allocations in years that miss out on significant inflows in the wet season.
Water is no longer the freely available commodity that it has been in the past and the community will need to have a stronger focus on harvesting and storing high-quality water in order to meet demand in the future for rural, household and commercial supply. Bore water allocations throughout the region are also becoming increasingly constrained and many farmers and commercial operators are looking for alternative sources of high-quality water. A case study showing how this has been achieved in the Ravenshoe area can be seen HERE.
